Synopsis

Logline:

Decades after graduating high school, a musician turned family man and music venue owner must decide between his family and his unrequited first love, when he discovers through social media that she felt the same way…and still does.

Synopsis:

In The Bronx (1969), high school musician John falls quietly in love with Leslie, the first person he’s met who lives outside of the city projects.

Decades later,  John’s the owner of the Greenwich Village coffee house - NIghtingale’s - where he once played as a young musician. However, the club’s escalating rent, along with college tuition, supporting aging parents, medical bills, and his family’s extravagant lifestyle, has buried him under insurmountable debt. He yearns for a time less complicated.

For the first time since high school, John is unsure of himself. To find his confident footing once again, he searches for answers by reaching out to people from his past on social media. His first love, Leslie, is one of those people.

As if only days have passed, John and Leslie make fast (renewed) friends in their online communication with one another. John opens up about his past feelings for Leslie, which he had not previously shared, and is gobsmacked to learn she felt the same way.

The spark reignites for both parties, as it never really went away. As their relationship re-develops, they weigh the ramifications of making a radical change to their lives:  John is thirty-five years married with two adopted and complicated teenagers. Leslie lives with her second husband, who has done his best to convince her that she would be nothing without him. Her youngest is eighteen and about to head to college. Leslie is terrified of what life alone with him will be like, but doesn’t believe he’ll let her leave.

In “Time It Was…,” social media destroys the wall between past and present as we explore the successes, passions, and longings of old high school friends. Memories and flashbacks from the sixties through the present reveal long-buried secrets that rewrite a collective story and ignite new temptations and possibilities for the future. Love and music lead characters and viewers to the answers in this dramatic exploration into the universal, lifelong quest for being comfortable in one’s skin.

Ultimately, John and Leslie must ask themselves if it’s too late to realistically change their path. If they do, will they be turning their backs on their families? And if they don’t, can they live in longing for the rest of their days?
